Old UK rankings - Help for update Empty Re: Old UK rankings - Help for update

What's the criteria for these guys concerning nationality etc? A lot of fighters there I wouldnt necessarily call 'British'. I guess you arent dropping guys for 1 year inactivity either.

How old are these btw, and did Oli Thompson vs Ben Smith not happen? I cant remember seeing it on the Sky Sports4 broadcast, though I think it was scheduled.

here's what Id suggest:

Heavyweights:
Sweeney could be dropped out of the top 10, as he's only got 1 win in his last five. Thompson has 1 win out of his last 9, I know he beat Tenzig but his record is still shoddy. Vemola's moving down to 205. That's three spaces open. Ben Smith is an obvious candidate.

But then Im at a loss to think of two other deserving heavyweights..I guess you could put Overeem at no.1. He's more British than some of those others imo.

Light Heavyweight
Id have Petresco at no.2, Vassell who just lost to a Swedish journeyman who's name escapes me, and Blackledge hasnt fought in over a year, + he beat Mysiala a few years ago.

Middleweight
Id have:
4. Makhonin (8-1 and just beat Sutherland)
5. Phillips (beat Zikic, 5-0 since lost to Sutherland against good guys)
6. Bostwick
7. Sutherland
8. Zikic (just dropped two, but he beat Izumi imo so not that big a drop)
9. Pushnon
10. Galesic (hasnt fought in a year)

Welterweight
Che Mills' stock just went up a whole lot. Id pop him at no.6. Paul Taylor is at 155 now too.

Lightweight
Id consider Taylor in at no.6 though I could understand him being left out as he hasnt gotten a win at 155 yet.

Dont recognise some of the names in either the Bantamweights or Featherweights so I wouldnt be much help there. Hope you found this useful.

@LondonCalling Many thanks for your input.

Ben Smith vs. Oli Thomson didn't happen. Ben Smith got a bad cut during training and received 15 stitches on it.

On an unrelated note: I think Petresco should move down to MW. When I saw his fight against Jimi M. I thought the difference was too big.

Edit: The rankings are from early September.

Petrescu is fighting Makhonin at BAMMA 5 according to their website. Id guess thats probably going to be at 185 but I dont know for sure.

edit:

What qualifies a fighter to be put into these rankings, in terms of nationality or what promotions theyve fought in etc ?

The qualifying factor is competing in the UK scene, so they don't have to necessarily be a UK citizen, but at the same time British nationals who are competing in the UFC are not ruled out even though they compete more abroad than in the UK.
So for example Andre Winner hasn't fought in the UK since November 2009.

The reason I am reluctant to remove these fighters is that:

1. Usually when there is a UFC event in the UK these guys will be on that card(so it's a bit annoying to keep adding or removing them from rankings based on when their last fight in the UK was)

2. UFC is planning to do more events in the UK which means the British fighters will probably compete at least once a year in the UK.

3. The UFC might drop them so it's nice to have them on the rankings in the domestic scene.

I think anything other than global ranking system is a bit awkward due to fighters competing internationally, but please let me know if you believe fighters qualifying for the UK rankings should be done differently.

No, that makes sense. What happens if a foreign fighter starts competing in UK promotions - how many fights does he need to be considered for ranking?

If he fights more than once in the UK, he will be included even if it is only once a year e.g. once in 2009 and once in 2010 etc. Because it means he is likely to accept fights in the UK in the future and somewhat becomes part of the UK MMA scene.

But there are fighters like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Curran_(fighter)

who has only fought in the uk once with no visible intention of competing again in the uk so there's no point of including him, if his name is to be removed the following year. Same thing goes for fighters such as Seth Petruzelli, etc.

But I do accept that however the domestic rankings are done, they will be logically flawed.
