Less is More
This is my earnest advice and what I've learned over the past 7 years or so;
Write shorter.
Look for word count and readability when you write and if you have something longer, no matter how good it is, people are going to lose interest and move on to something shorter and quicker.
Think in terms of TV vs. Film. A long thing, no matter how good is going to deter someone who only has a certain amount of time, so break it up into pieces. This means more content and more hits, anyway. So say you have something like IQ's Funaki piece. That could be something like 3 or 4 articles. Fletch's M-1 thing would be about 5 or more, even.
I'd say check Alexa.com once in a while and look at the bounce % and time on site. For example, LiverKick's time on site right now is an average of 8 minutes or so. That is actually a pretty high number, BloodyElbow is 5 minutes and MiddleEasy is 4. The TT site is at about 1 and a half minutes right now, so the best way to keep people is to have content that leans towards gradual visits and try to keep an ADD mind at ease.
The first 3 posts up right now; Bozo of the Week, Rian's Matchup News and the short M-1 blurb are pretty much what you should be looking for.

When you click on a category like "Boxing" all the stuff is shortened with "continue reading"
That's how the main page should be like, except a bit longer and show the pictures and videos at the top of the post

Re: Less is More
Yeah, the "read more" kind of stuff is the way to go if you aren't down with pruning or multiple posts.
The 'insert more' button on WordPress splits an article.
