Manny Pacquiao Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

A few posts ago I talked about how the Philippine Army wanted to use Manny’s celebrity to help bring peace to the Islands. Manny is now being nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize by a Filipino Community Activist from my hometown of Vancouver, Canada according to this report. Here’s a quote from Tom Avendano, activist and president of Multicultural Helping House Society in Vancouver :

“No Filipino has done what Manny Pacquiao has done. Every time Pacquiao has a fight, Filipinos all over the world are united. For several years now, crime rate was zero in the Philippines, there was ceasefire between rebels and government forces and nobody has been arguing or fighting whenever Pacquiao takes to the ring. Everyone is united. No Filipino has done that, and no one can do what he has been doing.”

For those that don’t know, the beautiful country of the Philippines is plagued with poverty, corrupt politicians, Islamic Militants, and many other of the same problems that Southeast Asian countries have problems with. Who knew that a little Filipino Boxer from one of the poorest areas of the Philippines could inspire a culture, stop crime, and show the world that anything is possible? I said it before, I’ll say it again and again, Manny Pacquiao’s social impact is almost as important as Muhammad Ali’s. It’s bigger than boxing, he is an icon, and hero to the people. When his career is long over, we’ll never forget the brilliant performances and epic wins. But what we’ll most remember is how he changed the world every time he smiled and stepped into a ring to fight. If any professional athlete deserves the same prize as Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, and Mother Teresa, it’s Manny Pacquiao. Not WAR PACQUIAO, PEACE PACQUIAO!
